The Network of Health Journalists in Kaduna State has applauded the Faith and Cultural Champions (FCC) initiative for its efforts in promoting awareness on childbirth spacing and maternal healthcare across communities in the state.
The commendation was made on Thursday during activities marking the 2026 International Day of Families by the team leader of the network, Ibrahima Yakubu, who also serves as the Head of Communication and Strategies at African Climate Reporters.
Yakubu described the FCC initiative as a significant intervention that has contributed to improving maternal health awareness, especially among women in both rural and urban communities.
According to him, a six-month assessment of the programme showed growing acceptance of childbirth spacing services, particularly in rural areas where awareness had previously been limited.
He noted that the initiative has encouraged more women to seek regular hospital care during pregnancy, helping to reduce health risks associated with childbirth.
Yakubu also called on husbands, especially in rural communities, to support their wives in accessing maternal healthcare services, stressing that family support remains essential for safer pregnancies and deliveries.
He further praised FCC coordinators in Kaduna for partnering with journalists in advocacy and sensitization campaigns, adding that the collaboration has strengthened community outreach efforts.
According to him, journalists have an important responsibility beyond reporting news, as they also contribute to public awareness and advocacy on critical health issues affecting underserved communities.
Yakubu congratulated families around the world on the occasion of the International Day of Families and urged stakeholders to continue promoting healthy family systems and maternal wellbeing.
