Public schools across Oyo State were shut on Monday as teachers joined a nationwide protest organised by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) over the continued captivity of pupils and teachers abducted about 18 days ago.
The action followed the abduction of students and teachers from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15 after armed men reportedly attacked Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School.
The protest sparked demonstrations in parts of Oyo and Ogun states, with residents, labour groups and civil society organisations demanding urgent action to secure the release of the victims.
In Ogbomoso, emotions ran high as families of the abductees expressed frustration over the prolonged captivity. One mother, whose children were among those kidnapped, broke down in tears while appealing for help.
“Where will I start from? The children are my tomorrow. Please help me,” she said.
A teacher, Ajibola Aboderin, condemned the abduction, particularly the involvement of very young children.
“How can anyone be so heartless as to kidnap a two-year-old? This country is deteriorating,” the teacher lamented.
Reports indicated that compliance with the strike was widespread across all 33 local government areas of Oyo State, with many public schools remaining closed as parents returned home with their children.
The NUT said the nationwide protest was aimed at drawing attention to growing insecurity affecting schools and communities while urging both federal and state governments to intensify efforts toward rescuing the abducted pupils and teachers.
The union also called for stronger security measures to protect schools and prevent future attacks on educational institutions across the country.
