The Nigeria Union of Journalists has strongly condemned a controversial remark made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, describing it as a threat to press freedom.
The remark, directed at Seun Okinbaloye of Channels Television, has sparked outrage within the media community.
In a statement issued on Monday, NUJ National President, Alhassan Yahya, said the union was “deeply shocked and outraged” by the minister’s comment, which he described as reckless and capable of intimidating journalists.
According to Yahya, the statement undermines press freedom and poses a serious threat to democratic principles, warning that such remarks from a senior government official could create fear among media practitioners and discourage critical reporting.
He noted that the union initially withheld its response in anticipation of a retraction or apology from the minister. However, the absence of any such move, he said, suggests the comment may have been deliberate.
“The statement creates a climate of fear for journalists striving to carry out their duties and sends a dangerous signal that critical reporting could attract hostility,” Yahya stated.
The NUJ has therefore called on Wike to issue an immediate and unconditional apology, while urging the Federal Government to clearly condemn the comment and reaffirm its commitment to protecting journalists and media independence.
The union also appealed to media organisations and civil society groups to stand united in defending press freedom, stressing that the safety of journalists remains vital to sustaining democracy in Nigeria.
