Members of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) on Wednesday gathered at the residence of the party’s founder, Boniface Aniebonam, in Apapa, Lagos, to celebrate a High Court judgment delivered in Abuja against the faction led by Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
The Federal Capital Territory High Court had ruled that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should recognise the National Working Committee of the NNPP led by Agbo Major, while rejecting the Kwankwaso-aligned Kwankwasiya Movement faction. Party members marked the decision with celebrations, expressing gratitude over what they described as a significant legal victory.
Reacting to the judgment, the Kwankwasiya Movement’s Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, dismissed the ruling as “patently illegal and logically flawed,” stating that the group would challenge it on appeal.
Speaking with journalists, Aniebonam criticised attacks on the judiciary, insisting that any further legal action should follow due process, particularly in relation to a pending case before the Appeal Court in Owerri, Imo State.
He further explained that Kwankwaso and Buba Galadima joined the NNPP in 2022 under a Memorandum of Understanding that has since expired. According to him, their current actions amount to an attempt to take control of the party.
Aniebonam added that the court’s decision provides clarity on the leadership and ownership structure of the NNPP, while also shedding light on recent political developments, including the reported defection of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to the APC.
