The Kano Patriotic Civil Society Coalition Forum (KPCF), representing 371 member organisations, has applauded the increasing inclusion of women in the ongoing political parties’ candidate nomination processes ahead of the 2027 General Elections in Kano State.
In a press statement issued on May 18, 2026, the coalition specifically praised Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for what it described as his commitment to inclusive leadership and support for women’s participation in governance and politics.
According to the Forum, the administration’s approach has continued to inspire hope among women, youths and vulnerable groups across the state.
KPCF described as historic the nomination of a female candidate for the Kano State House of Assembly from the Ghari/Tsanyawa constituency by a major political party, noting that it marked a significant step toward advancing gender inclusion and democratic participation in Kano State.
The coalition stated that greater participation of women in politics would strengthen democracy, equity and social justice, stressing that women remain key stakeholders in nation-building and governance.
While celebrating the development, the Forum also called on political parties in Kano State and across Nigeria to extend similar opportunities to Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) during party primaries and candidate selection processes.
The group expressed concern over what it described as the continued exclusion and underrepresentation of persons living with disabilities in political spaces despite their constitutional rights and contributions to society.
KPCF urged political parties to adopt affirmative policies that would guarantee fair participation and representation of PWDs at all levels of the electoral process.
The Forum further stated that inclusive political participation would provide marginalized groups with opportunities to contribute meaningfully to national development and strengthen democratic accountability.
Among its recommendations, KPCF called on political parties to institutionalize inclusive policies supporting women and PWD participation, ensure transparent and non-discriminatory candidate selection processes, and intensify advocacy for inclusive governance.
The coalition also urged citizens to support credible and competent candidates regardless of gender or physical condition.
The statement was jointly signed by the Forum’s conveners, Hassan Ibrahim Gama, Mustapha Muhammed Chiroma and Peter Hassan Tijjani.
