FIDA Raises Alarm Over Alleged Child Exploitation in Kano, Demands Urgent Action

The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Kano State branch, has condemned an alleged case of child labour and exploitation in Kano, calling for immediate intervention by relevant authorities.

In a formal complaint, the organisation accused a man identified as Nagwale, said to be operating around Zoo Road near Murtala Mosque in Kano, of engaging children in hawking aphrodisiac products under conditions described as harmful and inappropriate.

The complaint, signed by the branch Chairperson, Salma Ahmad Danbappha, a retired Chief Magistrate, stated that video evidence allegedly shows the children being exposed to exploitative environments while carrying out the activity.

According to the document, the alleged actions violate multiple provisions of the Child Protection Law, including prohibitions against child labour, child hawking, and exposing minors to indecent or harmful conditions.

FIDA described the situation as unlawful and abusive, warning that it poses a serious threat to the safety, dignity, and overall welfare of the affected children.

The organisation has called for the immediate investigation and arrest of the suspect, as well as swift prosecution if the allegations are confirmed.

Copies of the complaint were sent to key authorities, including the Kano State Ministry of Women Affairs, the police, the Director of Public Prosecutions, and the North-West zonal command of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons.

FIDA also urged the Kano State Police Command and the Ministry of Women Affairs, Children and Persons with Special Needs to take urgent steps to address the matter.

The group emphasized that the protection of children remains a fundamental responsibility of the state, stressing that no child should be subjected to exploitation, abuse, or hazardous labour under any circumstance.
