When Kano Chose Peace: The Kano First Spirit and the Steady Voice of Its Limamin, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya .By: Nworisa Michael

There are moments in the life of a community when a single incident can either divide people or bring them closer together. Such moments test not just our institutions, but our collective conscience. Recently, Kano experienced one of those moments. A disturbing video began circulating, stirring anxiety within parts of the community.

In a society as vibrant and diverse as Kano, situations like this can easily spiral into misunderstanding, suspicion, or even confrontation if not handled with wisdom and restraint.

But something different happened.
Instead of panic, there was engagement. Instead of escalation, there was responsibility.

Community voices reached out to the appropriate authorities, and the response that followed reminded many of us why peace must always come before everything else.

The swift response of the Kano State Police Command helped calm the situation. The confirmation that the individual responsible for the video had been arrested and the visible presence of security personnel in the community reassured residents that the matter was being handled seriously.

Officers like CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa and the team from the State Intelligence Department led by ACP Abdul Abdul Umar played a crucial role in restoring public confidence.
But security intervention alone does not always calm hearts.

Sometimes, people simply need to hear words of reassurance from voices they trust.

That reassurance came through the respected leadership of Sheikh Ibrahim Khalil, Chairman of the Council of Ulama.
Even through communication conveyed by his aide, the message was clear: the situation was under control and there was no cause for fear.

Yet beyond the immediate actions of individuals and institutions, this moment revealed something deeper about the direction Kano is trying to take.

Under the leadership of H.E Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf , the philosophy of the Kano First agenda speaks to a simple but powerful idea that the peace, unity, and stability of Kano must always come before politics, personal interests, or division.

And in moments like this, one could see that philosophy quietly at work.

The voice and strategic coordination of the Limamin Kano First agenda, Honourable Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Hon. Comr. Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya has consistently echoed the need for calm, responsibility, and the protection of Kano’s collective harmony.

But perhaps the greatest lesson from this episode is not about government or institutions alone. It is about the people of Kano.

It is about the quiet understanding that peace is too precious to gamble with. That rumors should not be allowed to grow into conflict. That sometimes the strongest response a society can give to fear is calmness.

Kano has always been more than a city. It is a meeting point of cultures, faiths, and communities. Its strength has never come from uniformity but from the ability of its people to coexist.

And when moments of uncertainty arise, the real test of any agenda whether political or social is how it protects that coexistence.

If the recent events taught us anything, it is that the idea of Kano First becomes real not in speeches, but in moments when leaders and citizens alike choose peace over provocation.

In the end, safeguarding Kano is not the duty of government alone.
It is the shared responsibility of everyone who calls this great city home.
