Following a deadly attack in Angwan Rukuba, Plateau State, Governor Hyacinth Alia has begun evacuating students of Benue origin from Jos to ensure their safety and prevent further escalation of tensions.

The evacuation, which started on Thursday, April 2, was confirmed in a statement released on Friday, April 3, by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula. The move has been commended by the Benue Medical and Dental Students’ Association (BEMSA), who praised the swift intervention.

Academic activities at the University of Jos were disrupted following the unrest, prompting the university management to postpone first-semester examinations and order students to vacate hostels. Governor Alia explained that the evacuation decision was taken to safeguard lives, particularly for students studying far from home.

Officials reported that over 600 students have already been relocated to Benue State, with additional transport arranged to assist other students wishing to return amid ongoing security concerns.

The governor also revealed that he is in discussions with Benue State Governor Caleb Mutfwang to restore calm in the affected areas and ensure that those responsible for the attacks are brought to justice.

In a statement, BEMSA lauded the “swift and decisive intervention” and urged authorities to extend assistance to other stranded and vulnerable students who remain in crisis-affected locations, noting that some are still at risk.

The Plateau State government continues to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing the protection of residents and the restoration of normalcy in Jos
