Governors of Northern Nigeria have strongly condemned the recent attack in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, describing the incident as tragic and contrary to the region’s long-standing values of peaceful coexistence.
The Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, made this known after the forum’s quarterly meeting held in Abuja.
In a statement issued by the Director-General of Press Affairs at the Gombe Government House, Ismaila Misilli, the governors said they had reviewed the security situation across the region and reaffirmed their collective commitment to tackling insecurity and related socio-economic challenges.
Governor Yahaya described the attack as “unfortunate and reprehensible,” noting that such violence is alien to Northern Nigeria, which has historically thrived on mutual respect and unity among diverse communities.
He called on residents of affected areas to remain calm and avoid reprisals, warning that retaliatory actions could escalate tensions further. He also urged community leaders, religious figures, and youth groups to work together in preserving peace and stability.
The NSGF chairman commended the Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, for taking swift measures to contain the situation, including the imposition of a 48-hour curfew in Jos North and the deployment of security personnel.
According to him, these proactive steps demonstrate responsible leadership and a firm commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
Governor Yahaya reiterated the forum’s support for security agencies, pledging continued collaboration to combat violence and criminality across the region. He also expressed confidence that those responsible for the attack would be apprehended and brought to justice.
He extended condolences to the government and people of Plateau State, particularly families who lost loved ones, and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured.
