The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has cautioned Nigerians against falling victim to fraudulent social media posts promoting fake National Identification Number (NIN) correction portals.
In a public advisory issued on Tuesday through its official X account, the commission described the circulating message and accompanying links as phishing scams designed to steal personal information from unsuspecting individuals.
NIMC reassured Nigerians that the National Identity Database remains secure and protected against unauthorized access.
“The public is advised to disregard fraudulent social media posts claiming that a free ‘Correction Portal’ has been opened through suspicious links. This is a phishing scam,” the commission stated.
The agency urged citizens not to click on unverified links and advised them to use only approved channels for any NIN-related modifications, updates, or corrections.
According to the commission, individuals seeking to update or correct their records should access services through the official self-service portal or visit authorized enrollment centres nationwide.
NIMC also encouraged Nigerians to verify information through its official communication platforms and remain vigilant against online fraudsters exploiting identity-related services.
The warning comes amid growing concerns over cyber scams targeting personal information, with fraudsters increasingly using fake websites and deceptive social media campaigns to lure victims into disclosing sensitive data.
The commission further urged members of the public to report suspicious messages or platforms offering identity services outside officially approved channels.
