The Kano State Government has approved a landmark housing project, the “Gida Gida Mega City,” aimed at addressing urban housing deficits and transforming city living. The approval came during the 38th Executive Council meeting, presided over by His Excellency, Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, at the Government House, Kano.
The Council sanctioned a total of N113,193,271,436.44 for the construction of 480 modern houses, forming the centerpiece of the state’s urban development agenda.
The project is designed to provide modern, affordable housing while generating employment and stimulating economic activity in the metropolitan area.
Emergency Operations and Urban Infrastructure
In addition to the Mega City project, the Executive Council approved N1,004,342,689.86 for the establishment of an Emergency Operations Management Centre at the Kano State Government House.
This initiative aims to improve disaster preparedness and response across the state.
The Ministry of Works and Infrastructure also received approvals for major road rehabilitation and construction projects, including:
Rimin Auzinawa Road (Ungogo LGA) – N119,952,625.22
Race Course Extension to Audu Bako Way, Alu Avenue, and Commandant Close (Nassarawa LGA) – N2,913,565,845.99
Ladanai Road Network – N184,350,183.48
Rehabilitation and asphalitic overlay of Gidan Malam Aminu – Tal’udu – Gadon Kaya – Yahaya Gusau – Sharada Road – N1,666,903,970.60
The Council also approved N13.2 billion for 2026 constituency projects and N1.5 billion for special intervention projects across rural and urban communities, demonstrating the administration’s commitment to broad-based development.
Housing and Socio-Economic Development
The Mega City housing scheme is part of a broader socio-economic strategy, complemented by policy decisions such as:
Awarding contracts for the construction of AKK Industrial Parks, supporting industrialization and job creation.
Implementing a mass vaccination exercise for sheep and goats across all 44 local government areas to boost livestock productivity.
Extension of water supply from the Challawa main pipeline to Zawaciki Gabas in Kumbotso LGA, improving access to clean water for residents.
Revision of the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board Law (2014) and forwarding of the Kano State Electricity Bill 2026 for legislative action.
Education, Health, and Community Services
The Council also approved several key interventions in education and health, including:
Purchase of textbooks for students across all 44 LGAs – N264 million
Procurement of dialysis machines for Abubakar Imam Urology Centre N89,710,080
Rehabilitation of government schools, boarding school feeding programs, and payment of outstanding suppliers over N3 billion collectively
Other notable approvals included compensation for households affected by transmission line projects and investments in nomadic education, rural roads, and tree planting campaigns.
These approvals, amounting to over N310 billion across sectors, reflect the administration’s commitment to sustainable development, urban transformation, and improved service delivery. The Mega City project, in particular, is expected to redefine urban living in Kano by combining modern housing, security, and infrastructural amenities.
