Kano Deputy Governorship: Yusuf Nominates Murtala Garo for Assembly Screening

Governor of Abba Kabir Yusuf has forwarded the name of Murtala Sule Garo to the Kano State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation as Deputy Governor.

The nomination was disclosed in a statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, who stated that the move is in line with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers a governor to appoint a deputy in the event of a vacancy.

The deputy governorship position became vacant following the resignation of former Deputy Governor, Abdussalam Gwarzo, on March 27, 2026.

According to the statement, the nomination followed wide consultations with key stakeholders across the state, with the governor urging the Assembly to expedite action on the confirmation process.

Garo, 48, is described as an experienced political administrator with over two decades of service in both elective and appointed roles. His previous positions include State Organising Secretary of his party, Special Adviser to the Governor, and Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area.

He also served as Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano State, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and was the Deputy Governorship Candidate of the APC in the 2023 general elections.

The nomination, the statement added, is part of ongoing efforts by the administration to strengthen governance structures and sustain effective service delivery across Kano State.
