FRSC Warns Against Assault on Personnels After Edo Attack

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a strong warning to motorists and members of the public against assaulting its personnel, reaffirming that such actions will attract strict legal consequences.

The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, gave the warning in a statement released in Abuja through the Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri. The caution follows the arrest of a suspect linked to a recent attack on FRSC operatives in Edo State.

Mohammed reiterated the agency’s zero-tolerance policy toward violence against its officers, stressing that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law.

He recounted that the incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, April 11, when a patrol team from the RS5.1 Edo Sector Command stopped a vehicle over a seat belt violation. Rather than comply, the driver reportedly fled while an FRSC marshal was still engaged in enforcement duties.

According to the corps marshal, the driver later mobilised a group of commercial tricycle operators who launched an attack on the officers. During the assault, one marshal was pushed into a gutter and beaten, while the team leader was also physically attacked. The suspect fled the scene after the incident.

He disclosed that the suspect was subsequently tracked and apprehended through a joint effort involving security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services.

Mohammed added that the suspect has confessed to the offence and expressed remorse for his actions.

The FRSC boss commended the swift and professional response of the collaborating security agencies, noting that their intervention ensured the suspect’s arrest.

He emphasised that assault on law enforcement officers remains a serious criminal offence and assured that due process would be followed, with appropriate legal action taken to serve as a deterrent.

“While we acknowledge the suspect’s remorse, the law will take its course,” he stated.

The corps marshal urged the public to cooperate with FRSC officials at all times and make use of established channels for complaints or grievances instead of resorting to violence.

He also reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to road safety, the rule of law, and the protection of its personnel.

Mohammed further disclosed that the injured marshal is currently in stable condition and receiving medical treatment.

He added that the corps would continue working with relevant stakeholders to ensure that individuals responsible for attacks on its personnel are identified, arrested, and prosecuted accordingly.
