The Federal Government has approved major sports infrastructure upgrades across the country as part of efforts to reposition Nigeria’s sporting facilities to meet international standards.
The approval was granted through the National Sports Commission (NSC) during the Commission’s Tenders Board meeting, where rehabilitation projects and new sports development initiatives were endorsed for implementation nationwide.
According to details released on Wednesday, the projects will focus on improving key sporting facilities across the country, with major upgrades planned for the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
The proposed works include pitch reconstruction, tartan track upgrades, refurbishment of essential facilities, establishment of a High Performance Centre, conversion of athletes’ hostels, rehabilitation of the swimming pool, installation of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) facilities, and development of new training pitches.
The initiative will also extend to sports centres in tertiary institutions and communities across the country to encourage grassroots sports development.
In addition, the government plans to support states hosting the National Sports Festival and continue ongoing stadium redevelopment projects in Lagos, Ibadan, Kaduna, and Kano in collaboration with state governments.
The Federal Government said the initiative is aimed at strengthening sports infrastructure, improving athlete development, and positioning Nigeria competitively on the global sporting stage.
