The Federal Government has intensified efforts to combat terrorism by strengthening collaboration with neighbouring countries in the Lake Chad Basin, calling for a renewed and coordinated military offensive against insurgent groups.
This development was disclosed in a statement issued by the Ministry of Defence, highlighting Nigeria’s commitment to deeper regional cooperation in tackling cross-border security threats.
Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, reaffirmed the country’s resolve to work closely with regional partners, stressing that sustained joint action is critical to dismantling terrorist networks and restoring stability across the region.
The high-level meeting brought together defence ministers and representatives from Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon, and Benin, alongside military chiefs, intelligence heads, and other key stakeholders involved in regional security operations.
According to the ministry, the gathering served as a strategic platform to review ongoing joint operations and enhance collective responses to terrorism and other transnational threats affecting the Lake Chad Basin.
Participants assessed reports from defence and intelligence leaders, focusing on the effectiveness of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) and evolving security challenges in the region.
Closed-door sessions also featured candid discussions on key issues such as troop deployment, funding limitations, and the changing nature of terrorist activities.
Gen. Musa commended the government and people of Chad for hosting the meeting and acknowledged their leadership role within the MNJTF framework.
The renewed engagement signals a strengthened regional commitment to degrade terrorist networks and improve security across the Lake Chad Basin.
