El-Rufai Appears in Court, Speaks on ADC Convention Amid Ongoing Trial

By Nworisa Michael

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, on Monday appeared before the Kaduna State High Court as proceedings resumed in his ongoing corruption trial, while also hinting at continued involvement in party politics.

El-Rufai is being prosecuted by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) alongside an associate, Amadu Sule, over allegations bordering on abuse of office, fraud, and conferring undue advantage.

Moments before the court session commenced, the former governor was overheard making a remark about the internal activities of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), saying, “So tomorrow is our convention, right?”—a statement that underscored his continued political engagement despite the legal proceedings against him.

The court appearance comes amid increasing legal pressure, as El-Rufai is also facing a separate 10-count charge before the Federal High Court over alleged money laundering and fraud involving ₦579.6 million and $1.1 million.

A bail hearing in that case has been scheduled for April 14.

Proceedings in the Kaduna case are ongoing.
