The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu as its Acting Secretary General following the resignation of Véron Mosengo-Omba.

The development was confirmed on Sunday, marking a significant leadership transition within the Cairo-based continental football body. Adamu’s appointment is considered historic, as he becomes the first Nigerian to occupy the position in CAF’s over 70-year history.

Reacting to the announcement, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) congratulated Adamu in a statement shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, describing the development as a proud moment for Nigerian football administrators.

The appointment follows Mosengo-Omba’s decision to step down after more than three decades in international football administration. In a statement issued from Cairo, Egypt, he said his resignation was to enable him focus on personal projects after years of service to the game.

Mosengo-Omba also stated that he leaves office after addressing concerns and allegations that arose during his tenure, expressing satisfaction with his contributions to the growth of African football.

He further appreciated CAF President Patrice Motsepe, alongside colleagues and stakeholders, for their support, noting that the organisation has made significant progress under his watch.

Adamu’s elevation is seen as a reflection of Nigeria’s growing influence within African football administration and governance.
