Nine members of the Nigerian Senate have formally defected from their respective political parties to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signaling a notable shift in the country’s political landscape.

The defections were announced during plenary after the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, read letters from the lawmakers notifying the chamber of their decision to join the party.

Among those who defected are three senators who left the Labour Party. They include Victor Umeh, Tony Nwoye and Ireti Kingibe.

Five others moved from the Peoples Democratic Party to the ADC. They are Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Binos Dauda Yaroe, Lawal Adamu Usman, Mohammed Ogoshi Onawo and Augustine Akobundu.

Also joining the ADC is Enyinnaya Abaribe, who until now was the only senator representing the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the Senate.

The lawmakers, in their letters, cited internal disagreements within their former parties and the need to align with a platform they believe better reflects their political direction.

Their move is expected to strengthen the ADC’s presence in the Senate and could reshape the dynamics of opposition politics in the National Assembly as political realignments continue ahead of future elections.
