APC Retains Zoning Formula Ahead of 2026 National Convention

Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), has reaffirmed that its existing zoning arrangement for positions in the National Working Committee (NWC) will remain unchanged as preparations intensify for the party’s 2026 National Convention.

The clarification was contained in a statement issued from the party’s national secretariat in Abuja and signed by the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka.

According to the statement, the zoning structure earlier outlined in the party’s 2026 Schedule of Nationwide Congresses, National Convention and Related Activities remains valid and binding for all aspirants seeking national offices within the party.

The party explained that the arrangement distributes National Working Committee positions among states within Nigeria’s six geo-political zones to promote balance, fairness and inclusivity in its leadership structure.

“The existing zoning arrangement for National Working Committee positions across states within the geo-political zones remains valid and applicable to the upcoming National Convention,” the statement said.

The APC leadership noted that the clarification became necessary following the growing interest of party members preparing to contest for various NWC positions ahead of the convention.

It added that strict compliance with the zoning formula would help prevent disputes and confusion during the nomination process.

Aspirants were therefore advised to study the zoning arrangement carefully before purchasing and submitting their Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms.

“Accordingly, aspirants are advised to be strictly guided by the existing zoning arrangement,” the statement further emphasized.

The National Working Committee serves as the party’s highest administrative body, responsible for the day-to-day management of party affairs, policy coordination and the implementation of decisions taken by the National Executive Committee.

Political observers say the decision by the APC to maintain the zoning structure reflects an effort to preserve internal cohesion as political activities gradually build up ahead of future national elections.

The party has long relied on zoning arrangements to balance political power among Nigeria’s six geo-political zones and manage regional expectations within its ranks.

Preparations for the 2026 National Convention are already underway, with party structures across the country expected to participate in a series of congresses and consultations leading up to the convention where new national officers will be elected.

The APC leadership also reiterated its commitment to conducting a transparent and orderly convention, urging party members nationwide to adhere strictly to the guidelines established for the exercise.
