Human rights lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju, has called on the Federal Government to arrest controversial Islamic cleric, Ahmad Gumi, over remarks linked to the country’s security challenges.
Adeyanju made the call on Wednesday following the circulation of a viral video in which Gumi reportedly spoke about armed bandits and Fulani herdsmen.
In the video, the cleric was heard saying that Fulani herdsmen “are not going anywhere,” adding that they remain part of the Nigerian society and that citizens must learn to coexist with them.
Reacting through a post on his Facebook page, Adeyanju argued that individuals perceived to be sympathising with terrorists should also be treated as terrorists.
According to him, people making such statements thrive only in societies where there is weak governance and lack of accountability.
The activist further described Gumi’s comments as dangerous and capable of encouraging insecurity, insisting that security agencies should take immediate action.
He maintained that arresting anyone accused of promoting or defending criminal elements would serve as a strong warning to others.
