130 Nigerians Seek Evacuation Amid Rising Xenophobic Tensions in South Africa

The Federal Government has revealed that no fewer than 130 Nigerians residing in South Africa have applied for voluntary evacuation following a fresh wave of anti-foreigner protests in parts of the country.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, made this known in a situation update shared on Sunday, stating that authorities are closely monitoring developments and taking proactive steps to protect Nigerian citizens.

She explained that arrangements are ongoing to compile details of affected Nigerians interested in returning home, adding that the current number of registered applicants stands at 130, with expectations that more may come forward.

The development comes amid growing concerns over recent protests in cities such as Pretoria and Johannesburg, where anti-foreigner sentiments have sparked fear among migrant communities, including Nigerians.

According to the minister, Nigerian diplomatic missions in South Africa are actively engaging with local authorities to ensure the safety of citizens while efforts continue to ease tensions. She also noted that Nigerian community groups are supporting the ongoing registration process for voluntary evacuation.

Recent incidents linked to xenophobic rhetoric and demonstrations have heightened anxiety within the Nigerian population in South Africa, prompting calls for urgent intervention.

The Nigerian government, she emphasized, remains committed to safeguarding its citizens and facilitating the safe return of those willing to leave, while maintaining diplomatic engagements with South African authorities as the situation evolves.
