The Leader of the Senate, Opeyemi Bamidele, has disclosed plans to sponsor a bill seeking a constitutional amendment that would introduce a single six-year tenure for Nigeria’s President and state governors.
According to Bamidele, the proposal is expected to be among the key legislative initiatives he intends to pursue in the next Senate after the 2027 general elections.
He explained that the proposed reform aims to replace the current two-term system with a single six-year tenure, arguing that it would enable elected leaders to focus more on governance rather than re-election campaigns.
Speaking on the rationale behind the proposal, the Senate Leader noted that the existing arrangement often compels public office holders to begin political calculations for a second term shortly after assuming office, thereby diverting attention from governance and service delivery.
Under the proposed framework, presidents and governors would be limited to one six-year term in office, eliminating the pressure associated with seeking re-election.
Bamidele argued that leaders who are not preoccupied with securing another term would be better positioned to concentrate on implementing policies and delivering on campaign promises throughout their tenure.
He acknowledged that opinions may differ on the proposal but maintained that lawmakers have a responsibility to introduce ideas they believe could strengthen governance and improve democratic institutions.
The Senate Leader further stressed that laws and constitutional provisions should evolve in response to changing realities and the developmental needs of society.
If passed by the National Assembly, the proposal would require an amendment to the Constitution and approval through the constitutional review process before it can take effect.
