Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command have foiled a kidnapping attempt in Abuja, rescuing a couple unhurt after a fierce gun battle with suspected kidnappers in the Byazhin area of the nation’s capital.
The operation, which took place in the early hours of Friday, also led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, a magazine, and seven rounds of live ammunition abandoned by the fleeing suspects.
In a statement issued by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, the command disclosed that operatives attached to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit acted on credible intelligence regarding the presence of suspected kidnappers around the Redeemed Church area of Byazhin, close to Paze Hills.
According to the statement, the team, led by the Officer Commanding the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, mobilised to the location at about 12:34 a.m. after receiving the intelligence report.
“Upon arrival, the operatives discovered that the armed suspects were attempting to forcefully gain entry into a residence with the intention of abducting the occupants. On sighting the police team, the suspects opened fire, prompting a swift response from officers,” Adeh said.
The ensuing gun duel reportedly lasted for more than 30 minutes, with police operatives eventually overpowering the attackers and preventing the abduction.
“The police operatives successfully repelled the attackers and foiled the kidnapping attempt. The suspects fled into nearby bushes with varying degrees of gunshot injuries,” the statement added.
Security operatives recovered one AK-47 rifle, one magazine, and seven rounds of live ammunition at the scene after the suspects escaped.
The intended victims, identified simply as Mr. Samson and his wife, were rescued safely and evacuated from the area.
Police said the couple was taken to the General Hospital in Gwarinpa for treatment related to trauma and later placed under protective custody.
Reacting to the successful operation, FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, praised the operatives for their courage, professionalism, and prompt response.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the territory and directed increased surveillance and patrol operations within the area to prevent further criminal activities.
Sanusi also urged residents to remain vigilant and continue supporting security agencies with credible and timely information to aid ongoing anti-crime efforts.
The operation forms part of ongoing efforts by the FCT Police Command to tackle kidnapping, banditry, and other violent crimes across Abuja and surrounding communities.
