A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former Kogi West senator, Dino Melaye, has criticised the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, over his reported move from the ADC to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
In a post shared on his verified Facebook page, Melaye accused Obi of seeking “free party tickets,” questioning his ability to handle political pressure and national leadership.
The former lawmaker argued that Obi’s decision to leave the ADC raises concerns about his readiness to confront Nigeria’s complex governance challenges, particularly as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections begin to intensify.
Melaye stated that Obi’s exit from the party suggests an unwillingness to endure internal party struggles, adding that managing Nigeria’s affairs requires resilience beyond what he described as party-level challenges.
He further alleged that Obi has a history of avoiding competitive party primaries, claiming that his previous political opportunities—including his governorship bid under APGA, vice-presidential candidacy, and presidential ticket under the Labour Party—were secured without contest.
Melaye also claimed, without providing evidence, that the NDC is aligned with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The development adds to the growing political discourse surrounding party alignments and potential realignments ahead of the next general election cycle.
