The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has strongly condemned the recent terrorist attacks in Mali, describing them as barbaric acts that threaten peace, security, and stability across the West African sub-region.
In a statement issued after the coordinated attacks carried out on Saturday, April 25, in several parts of Mali, the regional bloc said the violence once again highlighted the dangerous activities of extremist groups operating in the region.
ECOWAS stated that the attacks demonstrated the brutal nature of the perpetrators, who continue to undermine regional peace efforts and destabilize affected communities.
The commission called on member states, security agencies, regional institutions, and citizens across West Africa to strengthen cooperation and adopt a united approach in confronting terrorism.
According to the statement, defeating terrorism requires collective responsibility and coordinated action among governments and the people of the region.
ECOWAS urged all stakeholders to mobilize effectively against what it described as a growing scourge threatening the safety and future of West Africa.
The regional body also extended its condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the attacks and expressed solidarity with the government and people of Mali.
It reaffirmed its support for Mali as the country continues to confront security challenges linked to extremist violence.
The latest attacks have further raised concerns over worsening insecurity in West Africa, where terrorist activities continue to pose serious threats to national development and regional integration efforts.
