The Department of State Services (DSS) has released a young man from Yobe State, Mr. Ya’u Mohammed, after investigations reportedly confirmed that he had no involvement in any criminal activity.
In what many described as an unusual humanitarian gesture, the DSS also provided the youth with N2 million to support his reintegration into society and assist him in establishing a means of livelihood.
Mr. Ya’u Mohammed, an indigene of Gashua in Bade Local Government Area of Yobe State, was formally handed over to the Yobe State Government during a visit to the DSS Command Headquarters in Damaturu.
Speaking during the handover, the Special Adviser on Security Matters to the Yobe State Governor, retired Brigadier General Dahiru Abdulsalam, said his visit was aimed at confirming the circumstances surrounding the detention and eventual release of the young man.
According to him, further investigations conducted by the DSS cleared Mohammed of the allegations for which he had earlier been detained.
General Abdulsalam described the development as unprecedented, noting that in his many years of public service, he had never witnessed a situation where a cleared suspect was not only released but also financially supported to restart his life.
He commended the leadership of the DSS, stating that the gesture reflected a commitment to justice, compassion, and rehabilitation.
The retired military officer also called on security agencies across the country to continue upholding the rule of law and respecting the fundamental rights of citizens in order to strengthen public confidence and cooperation.
Reacting after regaining his freedom, Mohammed expressed gratitude to God and appreciated the DSS leadership for the support extended to him.
He pledged to make proper use of the N2 million assistance to build a sustainable source of income and support his family.
His father, Alhaji Muhammadu, who was present during the reunion, also expressed appreciation to the DSS for what he described as a compassionate intervention.
