Nigeria’s political landscape has witnessed rising tension following a formal petition by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), demanding the removal or resignation of its chairman over alleged misconduct.
The petition, submitted by the party’s National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, accuses the leadership of the electoral body of partisan behaviour, constitutional breaches, and actions the party claims threaten Nigeria’s multi-party democratic system.
According to ADC sources, the move represents an escalation in the ongoing dispute between the party and INEC, particularly in relation to recent controversies surrounding party leadership recognition and internal disagreements.
The party maintained that the allegations raised are fundamental to the credibility of the country’s electoral process, warning that failure to address them could undermine public confidence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Political observers say the development may trigger legal battles and intensify tensions between opposition parties and electoral authorities in the coming months.
Attention is now focused on INEC’s response, as the situation could have significant implications for Nigeria’s electoral system and the broader political environment.
