Yakubu Muhammad Fannami, an SS1 student of Darussalam Academy in Maiduguri, remains a symbol of uncommon bravery years after his selfless act saved dozens of lives during an attempted suicide attack in Borno State.
In January 25th 2017, Fannami confronted a female suicide bomber who attempted to detonate an improvised explosive device at a religious gathering in Kaleri village. In a moment of courage, the teenager restrained the attacker, preventing the explosion from reaching worshippers at the site.
Both Fannami and the bomber died in the incident, but his actions were credited with saving many lives that would have otherwise been lost.
The late student has since been remembered across Nigeria as a quiet hero whose sacrifice highlighted the resilience of civilians, especially youths, in the face of insurgency in the North-East.
His story continues to serve as a reminder that heroism is not defined by age or status, but by the willingness to protect others, even at great personal cost.
