The Nigerian entertainment industry has been thrown into mourning following the reported death of popular Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo at the age of 40.
According to The Sun Nigeria, the actor reportedly died on Monday, May 11, 2026, after battling cancer for several months. Family sources quoted by the newspaper said the actor had been ill for a prolonged period before his passing.
Ekubo’s absence from social media and public appearances in recent months had earlier sparked concern among fans and colleagues. His last Instagram post was reportedly made in December 2024, around the period reports emerged about the end of his engagement to US-based model Fancy Acholonu.
Following news of his death, tributes flooded social media from actors, entertainers, activists, and fans, many of whom described him as a talented performer and a compassionate individual.
Popular actress Funke Akindele shared an emotional tribute, saying she had hoped to see him again before his passing. She described Ekubo as a cherished friend whose memories she would always hold dear.
Actor Bolanle Ninalowo also mourned the late actor, praying for strength for his family and loved ones, while singer Peter Okoye simply wrote, “RIP.”
Veteran actor Richard Mofe-Damijo said he was deeply saddened by the news, describing Ekubo as a remarkable soul whose life and legacy would continue to be remembered.
Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore described the late actor as a “rare talent,” recalling one of his performances he watched during a flight journey.
Broadcaster Oseni Rufai and actor Godwin Nnadiekwe also expressed shock over the development, with Nnadiekwe describing the loss as heartbreaking.
Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong said Ekubo’s impact on the entertainment industry would continue to inspire younger actors.
Before his death, the actor had occasionally addressed public discussions surrounding his marital status, stating in one of his social media posts that he was focused on building his career and financial stability.
Ekubo rose to prominence through several successful Nollywood productions and became widely known for his charisma, versatility, and strong screen presence. Over the years, he built a reputation as one of Nollywood’s most recognisable actors, earning admiration from fans across Nigeria and beyond.
His death marks another painful loss for the Nigerian film industry and the wider entertainment community.
