The Kano State Government has dissolved the state’s Ministry of Higher Education and merged it with the Ministry of Education as part of ongoing reforms aimed at improving coordination and efficiency in the education sector.
The decision was approved by Abba Kabir Yusuf and announced in a statement issued on Sunday by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
According to the statement, the restructuring will see the newly unified ministry operate under the name Ministry of Education, while a Directorate of Higher Education will be created within the ministry to oversee tertiary education matters in the state.
The directorate will be headed by a Permanent Secretary and supported by relevant personnel to ensure effective supervision of higher education institutions.
Under the new arrangement, agencies previously under the defunct Ministry of Higher Education—including the State Scholarship Board—will return to the Ministry of Education. State-owned universities and other tertiary institutions will also be supervised by the newly created directorate.
The government said the restructuring forms part of a broader education sector reform programme aimed at strengthening policy coordination, eliminating duplication of responsibilities across ministries, and reducing the cost of governance.
Governor Yusuf stated that the reform is designed to improve efficiency, accountability, and the overall administration of education in the state.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to implementing far-reaching reforms to revitalise the education sector and improve learning outcomes for students across Kano.
Following the decision, the Office of the Secretary to the State Government and the Office of the Head of Service have been directed to ensure the immediate realignment of the affected ministries and departments to facilitate a smooth transition.
