The Anambra State Government has reopened the Nnewi New Motorcycle Spare Parts Market after a one-week closure over traders’ non-compliance with its directive to operate on Mondays.
The market was earlier shut by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Trade and Markets, Chief Evarist Uba, during an inspection visit in which he faulted traders for failing to open for business on Mondays in line with the state’s order against the sit-at-home practice. He had warned that the closure would be extended if compliance did not improve.
However, the Chairman of Nnewi North Local Government Area, Mr. Echezona Anazodo, on Monday visited the market and expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance observed among traders.
“I am happy to see that traders complied with the directive to resume business,” he said, noting that the market would not have been sealed if a similar turnout had been recorded the previous week.
Anazodo added that authorities would go round to seal only the shops of traders who failed to open, rather than shutting down the entire market.
“We don’t want a situation where the whole market suffers because of a few individuals. Those who refuse to comply will bear the consequences themselves,” he stated.
The reopening signals renewed enforcement of the state government’s stance against the Monday sit-at-home order in the area.
