The Kano State Government has renewed its call for religious harmony, tolerance, and responsible public conduct, warning against the growing culture of insults, intolerance, and sectarian divisions in society.
This message was delivered on Sunday, 8th February 2026, by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, who represented Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, at a two-day conference for Imams and Islamic scholars organised by the Tijjaniyya Progressive Youth Assembly of Nigeria. The conference was themed “Awakening Hearts and Restoring Human Values.”
Speaking on behalf of the governor, Comrade Waiya described the conference as timely and relevant, noting that it directly addresses the gradual erosion of societal values caused by actions and inactions that encourage disrespect for leaders, abusive language, and unhealthy sectarian rivalries.
He conveyed Governor Yusuf’s deep concern over the increasing level of religious and social intolerance in society, where insults and derogatory expressions have become common simply because of differences in opinions, beliefs, or sectarian leanings. He warned that such trends pose serious threats to social cohesion and peaceful coexistence.
According to him, the Kano State Government remains fully committed to supporting initiatives that promote peace, unity, and moral responsibility, stressing that these values are critical to building a safer, more tolerant, and more prosperous Kano State.
Comrade Waiya further emphasized that Islamic scholars remain one of the few groups not yet deeply affected by the culture of intolerance, adding that a great responsibility rests on them to uphold the dignity of Imamship and Islamic scholarship.
He urged the Ulamas to focus on teaching and preaching the true and beautiful message of Islam anchored on compassion, tolerance, and mutual respect rather than engaging in divisive debates or displays of intolerance, especially on social media platforms.
The conference ended on an optimistic note, with participants expressing confidence that the time has come for unity, mutual accommodation, and collective responsibility among Muslims, as well as serving as a positive mirror for the wider society.
