Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has approved a free Christmas transportation programme for 1,050 non-indigenes, widows and other vulnerable residents of the state, reinforcing his administration’s long-standing commitment to welfare, inclusion and peaceful coexistence.
The initiative was officially flagged off in Maiduguri, with beneficiaries provided free transportation to various destinations across the country to enable them celebrate the Christmas season with their families despite rising travel costs.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Implementation Committee, Chief Ugochukwu Egwudike, who represented the governor, explained that the programme was carefully designed to support non-indigenes, widows and economically vulnerable groups who have contributed to the social and economic life of Borno State. He noted that the exercise reflects the government’s resolve to ensure that no resident is left behind during festive periods.
Chief Egwudike assured beneficiaries that adequate safety and coordination measures were put in place to guarantee a smooth and secure journey, adding that the state government remains committed to promoting unity and mutual respect among people of different backgrounds living in Borno.

The free Christmas transport scheme is not the first of its kind under the Zulum administration. In previous years, the Borno State Government has implemented similar festive transport programmes, alongside broader humanitarian interventions including support for internally displaced persons, widows, orphans and other vulnerable groups.
The government has also consistently rolled out food distribution, shelter support and livelihood assistance during major religious celebrations.
Beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the state government, describing the initiative as timely and compassionate.
Many said the gesture eased the financial burden of travel and allowed them reconnect with loved ones during the festive season.
The programme further underscores Governor Zulum’s inclusive governance approach, which prioritises social welfare, unity and peaceful coexistence as key pillars of development in Borno State.
