Former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad (retd.), has died at the age of 71, marking the end of a distinguished judicial career that spanned decades at the nation’s highest courts.

Justice Tanko Muhammad reportedly passed away on Tuesday after battling a prolonged illness. His death has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s legal community, where he was widely regarded as a disciplined jurist, administrator and mentor.

Born in Bauchi State, Tanko Muhammad rose through the ranks of the judiciary, serving at various levels before his appointment to the Supreme Court of Nigeria in 2007. In 2019, he was appointed Chief Justice of Nigeria, a position that placed him at the helm of the country’s judicial system during a period of intense political and legal scrutiny.

As Chief Justice, he presided over several critical cases and administrative reforms aimed at strengthening judicial processes and maintaining institutional stability. His tenure, however, also faced challenges, culminating in his resignation in June 2022 amid internal concerns within the judiciary.

The Nigerian Association of Muslim Law Students confirmed his passing in a condolence statement, describing him as a man of integrity, humility and unwavering commitment to justice. The association noted that his contributions to legal education and judicial development would remain enduring.

Since the announcement of his death, tributes have continued to pour in from senior lawyers, judges, political leaders and civil society groups, many of whom described his passing as a profound loss to the nation and the legal profession.

Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad leaves behind a legacy defined by decades of public service, judicial leadership and dedication to the rule of law, as Nigeria mourns one of its most prominent legal minds.
