US-based commentator Mike Arnold has stirred fresh debate over Nigeria’s political future after publishing a strongly worded open message directed at former President Goodluck Jonathan.
In the post, Arnold described Jonathan as a “good man” and a “rare combination in African politics,” noting that he had previously met and spoken with the former Nigerian leader in person.
He recalled Jonathan’s rise to power in 2010 following the death of former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, describing his emergence as largely unplanned and constitutionally driven.
Arnold also referenced Jonathan’s 2015 concession speech after losing the presidential election, where he declared that his ambition was not worth the blood of any Nigerian — a moment widely celebrated globally as a peaceful transition of power.
However, the commentator questioned the long-term impact of that decision, arguing that Nigeria has since experienced worsening insecurity, displacement, and violence.
He claimed that millions of Nigerians have been affected by conflict in the years following 2015, including deaths, destruction of places of worship, and mass displacement, particularly in parts of the Middle Belt and North-East.
Arnold argued that the country is now in a more dangerous phase and suggested that Jonathan’s political return, if he decides to contest in 2027, would raise important questions about leadership, courage, and responsibility.
Addressing the former president directly, he asked whether Jonathan would return as a “fighter for the Nigerian people” or again approach national crises from the standpoint of political compromise.
He further questioned what lessons Jonathan may have learned from his 2015 defeat and whether a potential comeback would be driven by national duty or personal political ambition.
