Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has hinted at a possible return to the presidential race ahead of the 2027 general elections, amid increasing calls from supporters and political stakeholders urging him to contest.
Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Thursday, Jonathan said he would consider joining the race “when the need arises,” adding that consultations with well-meaning Nigerians and political associates are still ongoing.
The former president noted that he would continue engaging stakeholders across the country before making a final decision regarding a possible presidential bid.
In recent months, several groups, youth organisations, and political allies have intensified calls for Jonathan to return to active politics, citing his leadership experience and calm approach to governance during his tenure.
Some supporters have also argued that the country requires experienced leadership to address ongoing economic and security challenges.
Although Jonathan stopped short of making an official declaration, his latest remarks have further fueled speculations that he may formally announce his intention to contest the presidency in the near future.
Meanwhile, attention has shifted to an upcoming court ruling concerning his eligibility to participate in the 2027 presidential election.
According to reports, a case challenging Jonathan’s eligibility is expected to come up before the Federal High Court, with observers suggesting that the judgment could play a major role in determining his next political move.
Jonathan served as Nigeria’s president between 2010 and 2015 and has largely maintained a low political profile since leaving office, despite repeated appeals from supporters calling for his return.
