The United Bank for Africa (UBA) has dismissed as false a viral report alleging that its Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu, has divorced his wife.
In an official statement, the bank described the claim as misleading and malicious, noting that the story was fabricated and wrongly attributed to The Guardian Nigeria, which it said never published such a report.
UBA accused those behind the publication of deliberately attempting to damage the reputation and personal life of its chairman. It added that the matter has been reported to law enforcement agencies, which have since commenced investigations.
According to the bank, three suspects linked to the creation and spread of the false information have been arrested. They were identified as Kingsley Akunemeihe (also known as @Directorkem), Chigozie Success Ihebom, and John Surpruchi Nwanorue (@problemchimky).
The bank further disclosed that investigations are ongoing and more arrests may follow as authorities continue to track those involved in the circulation of the report.
UBA also issued a directive to bloggers, social media users, and platforms to immediately remove the false content and refrain from sharing similar claims. It advised individuals in possession of related materials, including digital records, to preserve them for possible legal proceedings.
Warning of legal consequences, the bank stated that failure to comply could result in lawsuits for defamation and other penalties under the law.
Reaffirming its position, UBA emphasized its commitment to protecting its corporate image and the integrity of its chairman, pledging to pursue all legal options to ensure those responsible are held accountable.
