Hon. Leke Abejide, the National Leader of the Nafiu Bala-led faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has announced his resignation from the party amid the lingering leadership crisis rocking the opposition platform.
Abejide, who represents Yagba Federal Constituency of Kogi State in the House of Representatives, made the announcement during a press conference in Abuja on Friday.
The lawmaker said his decision was driven by the prolonged internal crisis within the party and the legal uncertainties surrounding its leadership, which he believes could prevent the ADC from fielding candidates in the 2027 general elections.
According to him, the move followed professional advice from his legal team, who warned that the unresolved leadership dispute could jeopardize his political future.
Although he did not openly declare his next political destination, Abejide’s appearance in attire associated with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) strongly suggested he may be heading to the ruling party.
Abejide also revealed that he had officially handed over the party structure to Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe, the current factional national chairman.
Describing the decision as painful but necessary, he said he could no longer remain in a party plagued by leadership battles and legal complications.
He explained that around August 2025, he approached the court against the ADC coalition leaders, including Senator David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola, and Chief Ralph Nwosu, seeking clarity on the party’s leadership and a speedy resolution before electoral activities intensified.
According to him, while the court granted accelerated hearing, repeated applications and the introduction of new parties into the suit by the defendants delayed proceedings and frustrated efforts to resolve the matter on time.
He said his counsel later advised him to seek an alternative political platform, arguing that the ADC was effectively leaderless, with no validly recognized National Chairman and National Secretary to sign nomination forms as required by law.
Abejide noted that he had invested heavily in building the party structure and decided to willingly transfer it to Nafiu Bala while wishing him success in the ongoing legal battle.
He added that after consultations with his political associates, constituents, and supporters, he chose to align himself with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu.
He thanked those who stood by him during the process of building what he described as a strong political party before it was allegedly hijacked by individuals known for similar actions since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.
“With this, I formally announce that I have moved on from the ADC to pursue my political future elsewhere,” he said.
