Nigerians Question NAF’s Success in Foiling Benin Coup Amid Ongoing Insecurity at Home

By Nworisa Michael

Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, spokesperson for the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), has confirmed that NAF conducted operations in the Republic of Benin following reports of an attempted coup in the neighbouring West African nation.

Ejodame explained that the operation was part of Nigeria’s regional security commitments and long-standing defence cooperation with Benin. He noted that the Air Force responded swiftly after receiving intelligence indicating a threat to Benin’s stability, adding that the intervention contributed to neutralising the coup attempt before it escalated.

While the action has been praised in some quarters as a demonstration of Nigeria’s military capability, the development has also generated a wave of public criticism back home.

Across social media, many Nigerians questioned how the Air Force was able to successfully assist in foiling a coup abroad, yet violent insecurity such as banditry, terrorism, and kidnappings continues to ravage various parts of Nigeria.

Some argued that the same level of intelligence, coordination, and rapid response used in Benin should be applied more aggressively to domestic security challenges. Others expressed frustration that Nigeria appears more effective in foreign operations than in tackling long-standing threats within its own borders.

Despite the mixed reactions, NAF maintains that its internal operations remain active and aligned with national security priorities.
