Stop Chasing Trends—Commissioner Warns Journalists Against Social Media Reporting

By SAMPSON Uhuegbu

Journalists have been urged to return to the core principles of the profession as concerns grow over the spread of misinformation in Nigeria’s digital space.

The Imo State Commissioner for Information, Declan Emelumba, issued a strong warning against relying on unverified social media content.

Speaking at a media conference in Owerri, he cautioned that the rush for online engagement is replacing thorough investigation and balanced reporting.

“A good journalist must verify, investigate, and present balanced facts not social media rumours,” he said.

He further warned that publishing false or one-sided reports could attract legal consequences, including imprisonment.
