Shettima Visits Maiduguri Blast Victims, Assures Continued Fight Against Terror

Vice President Kashim Shettima has visited victims of the recent bomb explosion at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), offering condolences to the government and people of Borno State over the tragic incident.

The attack, which occurred on March 16, 2026, affected parts of Maiduguri, including the hospital facility, leaving several casualties.

During the visit, the Vice President described the incident as a tragedy, stressing that no religion supports the killing of innocent people. He condemned the perpetrators, identified as members of Boko Haram, describing their actions as inhumane and unacceptable.

“We are here to commiserate with the government and people of Borno State over this sad incident,” Shettima said.

He assured Nigerians that the government remains determined to restore peace and stability across the country.

“We want to assure Nigerians that we will not rest until peace and sanity are fully restored in Borno, the North-East, and the country at large,” he added.

Expressing optimism despite the setback, Shettima noted that the fight against insecurity would ultimately succeed.

“No matter how long darkness persists, it will eventually give way to light,” he said.

The Vice President reiterated the commitment of the Nigerian government to ending such attacks and ensuring lasting stability.

He also disclosed that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in collaboration with other partners, would commence the distribution of relief materials to injured victims and families affected by the blast.

Shettima commended the swift response of relevant agencies, including the North East Development Commission (NEDC) and the Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), for their efforts in managing the aftermath of the incident.

He emphasized the responsibility of government and stakeholders to support victims, assuring that all necessary assistance would be provided to aid recovery.

The Vice President also appreciated the role of the media in informing the public and raising awareness during critical situations.

He was accompanied on the visit by key government officials, including the Director-General of NEMA and the Deputy Governor of Borno State, as part of ongoing efforts to address the impact of the attack.
