Civil society organisations in Kano have sharply criticised a recent media publication that branded the state as “a new bandits frontier,” describing the claim as inaccurate, sensational, and harmful to Kano’s long-standing reputation as one of Nigeria’s most stable urban centres.
The coalition comprising 262 organisations under the Kano Patriotic CSOs Coalition Forum (KPCF) issued the statement through its Convener, Hassan Ibrahim Gama, and Co-Convener, Mustapha Muhammad Chiroma.
According to the forum, the headline created unnecessary fear and misrepresented the true security situation in Kano.
Gama stated that while security challenges exist along some border communities, these isolated incidents do not reflect the overall reality of the state, especially within Kano metropolis where no banditry attacks have been recorded. He said the report ignored ongoing operations that security agencies are conducting in affected rural areas to keep threats at bay.
The coalition also faulted the portrayal of a supposed breakdown between the state government and security institutions.
They described such insinuations as “unfounded and dangerous,” insisting that the state government maintains functional coordination with all security agencies, including the Police, Military, DSS, Civil Defence, vigilante groups and community intelligence networks.
According to the CSOs, the misleading headline could create panic, discourage investors, and weaken public confidence in the state’s stability a consequence they say the media must take seriously.
The coalition called on journalists and media houses to adopt responsible, fact-based reporting, especially on sensitive issues like security, which can influence public behaviour and economic decisions.
They urged residents to remain calm, support ongoing security efforts, and reject narratives that exaggerate challenges or undermine the resilience for which Kano is widely known.
