By Nworisa Michael

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi reportedly escaped an attack by suspected hoodlums in Benin City on Tuesday, sparking fresh concerns over political tensions ahead of the 2027 elections.

According to videos circulating online, armed men allegedly stormed a premises linked to supporters of Obi and former Edo State governor John Oyegun, firing sporadically and causing damage to gates and vehicles within the compound. Visible bullet marks were seen on parts of the property in the footage.

In one of the clips, Obi lamented the development, pointing at the damaged structures and describing the situation as troubling for Nigeria’s democracy.

Another account claimed the incident occurred shortly after the group left the headquarters of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Benin and moved to Oyegun’s residence, where the alleged attack took place.

An eyewitness suggested the attack might be politically motivated, referencing the 2027 general elections. However, authorities have yet to officially confirm the incident or provide details regarding arrests.

As of press time, security agencies had not issued a formal statement on the matter.
