Justice has finally caught up with 51-year-old commercial driver, Okon Jimmy Ama, as the State High Court in Uyo delivered judgment in a deeply disturbing family abuse case that began nearly a decade ago.

Ama, a resident of Ikot Ekop village in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area, was convicted on multiple charges including incest, rape and assault involving his two teenage daughters. The prosecution, which lasted close to ten years, ended with a sentence the court said reflects the gravity of the offences.

Presiding judge, Hon. Justice Winifred Effiong, found the defendant guilty on all counts. The court sentenced him to seven years imprisonment each on two counts of incest, three years for assault occasioning bodily harm, and fourteen years for rape.

Although the total sentence amounts to 24 years, the judge ruled that the terms will run concurrently, meaning he will serve a maximum of 14 years in prison.

The case first came to light in 2015 after reports revealed prolonged abuse of the minors, who were aged 13 and 16 at the time the incidents were uncovered. During trial, prosecutors presented evidence of repeated abuse and physical violence.

Lead prosecutor, Ofonime Idio of the State Ministry of Justice, described the judgment as a significant statement against sexual abuse in Akwa Ibom. He said the ruling underscores the commitment of the justice system to protect vulnerable persons and ensure offenders are held accountable.

The judgment is being viewed as a strong warning that sexual abuse, even within families, will not go unpunished, and that justice, though sometimes delayed, can still prevail.
