Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Obi announced his decision on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at a political gathering held in Enugu, marking a major shift in Nigeria’s opposition political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the event, Obi said his move to the coalition-backed ADC was driven by the need to reposition the country and begin what he described as a “rescue journey” for Nigeria.
“We are ending this year with the hope that in 2026 we will begin a rescue journey,” Obi stated.
He further vowed that the opposition would challenge electoral malpractice within the bounds of the law, stressing that democratic integrity must be protected.
“We will resist rigging of elections by every lawful means in 2027,” he added.
Obi also called on opposition leaders across the country to unite under the leadership of former Senate President and ADC National Chairman, David Mark, in order to present a formidable front capable of effecting national transformation.
The event attracted several prominent political figures, including David Mark, former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, former governors from the South-East, and other senior party leaders.
Also in attendance were former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Emeka Ihedioha, Senators Ben Obi, Victor Umeh, Tony Nwoye, Gilbert Nnaji, Enyinnya Abaribe, Sam Egwu, as well as other members of the National Assembly and key political stakeholders.
Peter Obi’s defection formally ends his association with the Labour Party and signals a new phase in opposition coalition politics as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.
