Monarchs Nullify Youth Group’s Ban on Senator Kalu’s Movement in Abia North

By Nworisa Michael

The Udumeze Ohafia Ancient Kingdom and the Council of Ohafia Monarchs have officially nullified the declaration by the Ohafia Youths Association Inc., which had labeled Senator Orji Uzor Kalu as “persona non grata” in the Ohafia communities. The youth group had issued this declaration in January 2026, alleging that the senator, who represents Abia North, made statements they considered contrary to the interests and reputation of the Ohafia people.

In response, the Udumeze Ohafia in-Council took swift action to douse rising tensions, formally annulling the youth group’s proclamation on January 21, 2026. The council highlighted that the actions of the youth association were in violation of Sections 39 and 40 of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution (as amended), which guarantee citizens the right to freedom of movement.

The council emphasized that Senator Kalu retains the constitutional right to move freely within his constituency, including all communities in Ohafia, and that no individual or group has the authority to restrict this right. The decision underscores the traditional rulers’ commitment to upholding constitutional freedoms while maintaining peace and harmony in their domains.

The Ohafia Youths Association Inc., led by its Chairman, Obasi Kalu Obasi, and Secretary, Onyekachi Uduma, had claimed that the senator’s alleged remarks were harmful to the community’s interests. However, the monarchs’ swift intervention clarified that the senator’s movements cannot be curtailed based on the youth group’s assertions.

This development marks a decisive moment in the ongoing dialogue between traditional authorities and youth organizations in the region, reinforcing the role of the monarchs as custodians of both culture and constitutional order. The council has called for calm and unity among residents, urging all groups to resolve disagreements through lawful and peaceful channels.

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, a prominent political figure and representative of Abia North, can now continue his activities in the Ohafia communities without obstruction, as the monarchs’ ruling restores his full rights to engage with his constituents.
