The Kano State Government has intensified efforts to deepen civic participation ahead of the 2027 general elections, setting an ambitious target of registering no fewer than four million eligible voters across the state.
Speaking during a media briefing in Kano on Thursday, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, said Kano is steadily outperforming many states in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration exercise.
According to him, a total of 267,790 eligible residents have successfully completed voter registration since August 2025 and are currently awaiting the collection of their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
While describing the figure as a positive development, Waiya noted that it represents only a small portion of Kano’s vast electoral population, stressing the need for intensified mobilisation to meet the state’s voter registration target ahead of 2027.
To fast-track the process, the commissioner revealed that the state government, in August 2025, constituted a high-level sensitisation committee to drive voter awareness and participation across the state’s 44 local government areas.
The committee comprises key commissioners, special advisers, officials of the Hisbah Board, and representatives of organised labour, the media, student bodies, women groups, and other critical stakeholders. Its mandate, he said, is to ensure widespread community engagement and sustained participation in voter registration and PVC collection.
Beyond electoral matters, Waiya also highlighted the administration’s development agenda, disclosing that over 900 projects are currently being executed across the state.
He explained that the projects span critical sectors and are deliberately spread across all local government areas to promote inclusive development and improve the living standards of residents.
The commissioner urged Kano residents to continue supporting the present administration, emphasising that public cooperation remains vital to the successful delivery of government programmes.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparency, citizen engagement, and democratic participation, calling on all eligible residents to take advantage of the ongoing voter registration exercise.
