The Kano State Government has dismissed speculations linking recent political realignments to the status of the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, insisting that the traditional institution remains insulated from party politics.
The clarification followed growing public discussions after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), with some quarters suggesting that the move could affect the reinstatement of the former Central Bank Governor as Emir.
According to a report by Daily Trust, speaking on the matter, the Governor’s spokesperson Sanusi Bature D-Tofa stressed that the position of Emir Sanusi is firmly rooted in law and due process, not political affiliation “The appointment of the emir was done after the emirates law had been repealed, and there is no plan at the executive level for any further amendment ”. According to him, the administration has no intention of revisiting or reversing decisions concerning the Kano emirate based on partisan considerations, “This defection to the APC will not in any way change the status quo. Emir Sanusi remains the Emir of Kano. There is no move, no intention to substitute him.” Sanusi said.
He noted that the emirate issue has already been subjected to legal and institutional scrutiny, adding that the government remains committed to upholding the rule of law and preserving the dignity of traditional institutions in the state.
People believe the government’s statement is aimed at calming public anxiety and preventing the politicisation of the Kano emirate, which has in recent years been drawn into political contestations.
Residents and civil society actors have continued to call for restraint among political leaders, warning that linking party politics with traditional authority could undermine peace and social cohesion in Kano State.
The Kano State Government reaffirmed its commitment to stability, urging the public to disregard unfounded speculations and allow traditional institutions to function independently within the confines of the law.
