Confusion in Benin Republic as Soldiers Announce Takeover, Government Says Coup Foiled

By Nworisa Michael

Tension rose in Benin Republic on Sunday after a group of soldiers appeared on national television announcing that they had taken over power, dissolved the government, and suspended the constitution.

The mutinous soldiers, who identified themselves as members of a body called the Military Committee for Refoundation (CMR), claimed they had removed President Patrice Talon from office and appointed Lieutenant-Colonel Pascal Tigri as the new head of state. They also announced the closure of borders and suspension of political party activities.

However, within hours, the Beninese government pushed back strongly against the announcement.

According to official statements from the presidency and security sources, the attempt was carried out by a “small group” of dissident soldiers and has since been foiled. Authorities say loyal forces have regained control of key state institutions and that President Talon is safe.

International reactions were cautious as the situation developed, with observers warning of rising political tensions in the West African country.

As of the latest update, the government maintains that normalcy is being restored, even though the incident has raised fresh concerns about growing instability in the region.
