BREAKING: Nigerian Military Confirms Coup

By Nworisa Michael

The Armed Forces of Nigeria has confirmed that some of the sixteen officers earlier arrested for acts of indiscipline are facing allegations linked to plotting to overthrow the government, marking a significant development in a case that initially drew widespread public speculation.

In a press release issued on Monday, January 26, 2026, and signed by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the Defence Headquarters announced that investigations into the officers’ conduct have been concluded and forwarded to the appropriate superior authority in line with existing military regulations.

The military recalled that it had announced the arrest of the sixteen officers in October 2025 over breaches of service regulations. However, following a comprehensive investigation conducted under established military procedures, findings revealed that some of the officers have cases to answer, including allegations bordering on attempts to undermine constitutional authority.

According to the statement, officers found culpable will be formally arraigned before appropriate military judicial panels to face trial in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations. The process is aimed at ensuring accountability while strictly observing fairness and due process.

The military emphasised that the actions being taken are purely disciplinary and part of its internal institutional mechanisms to maintain order, discipline and operational effectiveness within the ranks.

The Armed Forces of Nigeria remain resolute in maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, loyalty and respect for constitutional authority,” the statement added.

The clarification comes amid public debate over the nature of the alleged offences, as earlier official communication had focused on indiscipline without publicly confirming coup-related elements. Monday’s update now provides clearer insight into the gravity of the allegations being handled within the military justice system.
